Let’s Talk About How the Economy is Affecting Arts & Crafts
May 16th, 2009
Welcome Everyone,
I would like to welcome you all to my Blog Let’s Talk About Arts and Crafts. First off I would like to thank you all for staying on subject, being considerate of each other, and being considerate of my business.
Now to get the discussion started, I was wondering what effects you think the falling economy will have on the Art and Craft Show Industry if any.
Thank you,

I will be the first to reply to the question what effects do you feel the current economy will have on the Art and Craft Show business?
I feel that as more people lose their 9 to 5 jobs that many of them will be looking within themselves for marketable skills. I believe that everyone has a hobby or interest that could earn them a living if it was marketed appropriately and in the correct place. I believe that this means more artists, crafts people, antique enthusiasts etc. will be turning to their talents as a full time job.
I feel that the recent turn of attitude back toward knowing, liking, and trusting the person that we buy from (aka buying directly from the artist) will further drive the Art and Craft Show market to expand. Most of us will pay a little more to know that the product we are buying is made, sold, and gauranteed by an individual whose business would be hurt by our not being satisfied or vice versa.
As more fairs and festivals do an economic impact study and communities realize their values more shows should occur. I believe that our industry has a great economic impact on our communities and that we should continue to help our economy by recognizing the great worth of our industry to our national economy.
What do you think?
Sincerely,
Shasta McLaughlin

I know that the economy is affecting artists and craftsman’s bottom line. The price of gas is either affecting how far an artist or crafts person travels to shows or affects the price of their merchandise. It also has an influence on how much customers at art and craft shows spend as it puts a crimp on their budget.
One thing I would like to point out is that we can use the economy as a sales tool.
They say that every dollar spent in a community usually changes hands at least seven times before leaving that community. So by buying from a local artist your customers are supporting you and at least 6 other families in your community.
Remind your customers how buying locally helps to create jobs, and to create, protect and support their local and national economy.
Your blog is interesting!
Keep up the good work!
